In biology, a root cap is the protective covering surrounding the tip of a root, allowing plants to penetrate the soil. The work refers to this same function of penetrating the earth, as it occurs in oil exploration and extraction—an activity that is recent in the planet’s geological history and that transforms its superficial layer.
